Princeton vs. Yale Pink Zone game
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/27/10) - The Princeton women's basketball team will resume action after a 19-day hiatus for finals and semester break this weekend when it hosts Brown and Yale. The Tigers will host Brown on Friday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m., and Yale on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m., in the annual Pink Zone game. Saturday's game will be broadcast regionally on Verizon FiOS 1. The game will air on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m., and on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Ralph Bednarczyk be the play-by-play man with Alaa Abdelnaby doing the color with Ashley Asquino as the sideline reporter.
The Tigers are 13-2 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League after defeating Penn, 70-39, in their most recent game. The team averages 71.7 points per game and keeps opponents at 53.3 points per game, an +18.4 scoring margin. The squad shoots 44.8 percent from the field, 38.2 percent from long range and 68.8 percent from the free throw line. Leading the Tigers offensively is freshman Niveen Rasheed. Rasheed averages a team-high 16.9 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game. In addition she leads the team in assists with 41 and steals with 33. Sophomore Lauren Edwards and junior Addie Micir have been neck and neck in the scoring column all season with Edwards contributing 12.9 and Micir 12.4 points per game. Micir is shooting 46.6 percent from behind the arc, getting nearly half of her points from long range. She also has 37 assists and 14 steals, while Edwards has 31 assists, 18 steals and 13 blocks. Leading the team in blocked shots is sophomore Devona Allgood with 20. She also chips in 10.2 points per game and 7.6 boards per game.
Princeton and Brown will be meeting for the 62nd time since the series began in 1974. The Tigers hold a slim 32-29 edge in the all-time series and have won the last seven games. The last time Brown won at Jadwin Gym was March 1, 2003.
Brown is 4-12 overall and is 1-7 when playing away from Pizzatola Sports Center. The Bears are 1-1 in the league after splitting its series with travel partner Yale, winning the first 60-56 and and falling 67-43 in the second match. The squad averages 53.9 points per game and shoots 32.5 percent from the floor while its opponents are averaging 68.2 points per game. The Bears are 69.5 percent from the free throw line and 26 percent from behind the arc. Sophomore Hannah Passafuime and senior Christina Johnson are the teams' leading scorers with 9.0 and 8.9 points per game, respetively. Johnson has the best field goal and free throw percentage on the team at 43.3 and 82.5 percent. She is second in the team in rebounding with 4.4 rebounds per game. Senior Natalie Bonds leads the team under the basket with 6.3 boards per game and has a team-high 19 blocks to go along with 5.6 points per game. Passafuime leads the team in steals with 24, while senior Courtney Lee has a team-best 37 assists.
Princeton and Yale will be meeting for the 72nd time since first seeing each other in 1973. The Tigers hold a 41-30 advantage in the all-time series. The teams have split the series in each of the last three years. Last year, Yale won at Jadwin Gym 56-54 before the Tigers responded with a 61-53 win in New Haven.
Yale enters the weekend with a 6-10 overall record and split its series with travel partner Brown. The team averages 61.6 points per game but has a -3.7 scoring margin when comparing its opponents' 65.4 points. The Bulldogs are shooting 36 percent from the field, 24.9 percent from behind the arc and 68.1 percent from the free throw line. Freshman guard Megan Vasquez leads Yale in scoring with 11.3 points per game and has earned a starting role recently. Juniors Yoyo Greenfield and Mady Gobrecht pick up 9.8 and 9.7 points per game. Sophomore Michelle Cashen leads the team in rebounds with 7.4 boards per game, and chips in 8.2 points per game. Gobrecht and senior Haywood Wright are the other two top rebounders on the team, pulling down 6.6 and 5.1 boards per game. Gobrecht leads the team in assists with 40 and in blocks with 22, while Cashen has a team-best 26 steals.
Princeton and Brown have played one common opponent, American. The Tigers defeated the Eagles 77-45, while the Bears lost 64-54. Princeton and Yale haven't played any similar non-conference opponents.
