Princeton senior Bernie D'Amato won his second tournament as a Tiger Saturday, shooting 1-over to take the Yale Spring Opener title in New Haven, not far from his native Weston, Conn.
D'Amato shot a first-round 68 and followed it up with a 73 over the 36 holes played Saturday, allowing him to finish one shot ahead of co-runners-up Michael Kania and Steve Skurla. The two Villanova golfers helped the Wildcats take the team title at +23, nine shots ahead of Yale.
Princeton shot +38 as a team, tying with Temple for fourth. Nicholas Ricci (+12), Greg Jarmas (+13), Quinn Prchal (+15) and Joseph D'Amato (+24) rounded out the Princeton five. The Tigers were just six shots behind Yale on the Bulldogs' home course and finished two shots in front of Penn, five in front of Columbia, 15 in front of Brown, 20 in front of Dartmouth and 46 ahead of Cornell as seven Ivy teams were among a 14-team field that included a second group of Yale players that finished eighth overall.
Bernie D'Amato won the Classic at Shelter Harbor on Oct. 16, 2011 and is the last Tiger to win tournament medalist honors.
Princeton will return to action when it hosts its annual home invitational next weekend at Springdale Golf Club. Complete results from the Yale tournament are available at the PDF link on this page.
