Freshman Garrett Frey is posting one of the best freshman years of a Tiger wrestler in decades. By prolonging it during a terrific EIWA Championship weekend, Frey earned GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week honors.
The 125-pounder became the first Princeton wrestler to reach the EIWA finals since 2003 (Greg Parker) and the first Princeton wrestler to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 2005 (Jake Butler) when he reached the 125-pound final at last weekend's EIWA Championships. Frey did it the hard way; he went in as the seventh seed and knocked off two of the top three seeds along the way. After pinning second-seeded Joe Langel of Rutgers in the quarterfinal, Frey topped third-seeded Jasen Borschoff 6-1 in the semifinal.
Frey ultimately fell to reigning NCAA champion Troy Nickerson in the final, but not before securing another weekend of competition in his brilliant freshman season. He is currently 26-7 on the season and was just outside the national Top 25 entering the Eastern Championships, although both Langel and Borschoff were ranked competitors.
Frey will find out his position in the 125-pound NCAA Championships when the brackets are announced this Wednesday.
