COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Princeton turned in a doubleheader split Saturday to pick up the 2010 season's first win on the second day of the campaign, defeating Mount St. Mary's 6-1 before losing to Maryland 7-5.
The Tigers are now 1-3 and will face Towson (5-3) at 10 a.m. Sunday in Princeton's last game of the Maryland tournament.
Princeton 6, Mount St. Mary's 1
The Tigers picked up five runs over the first three innings courtesy of a two-run home run by Jamie Lettire in the first, a run-scoring double by fellow senior Collette Abbott in the same frame, and a round-tripper by rookie Alex Peyton in the third. The home run was the first of Peyton's career, and Lettire's shot made her the third Tiger in program history to hit 30 home runs. Kelsey Quist, another senior, hit her 27th career home run in the fifth for Princeton's last run of the game.
Peyton was solid in the circle as well, giving up four hits and two walks in five innings of work with just a run allowed before fellow freshman Liza Kuhn entered in relief and gave up one hit in two innings.
Maryland 7, Princeton 5
Maryland jumped on the Tigers early, scoring its seven runs in the first four innings before Princeton rallied late to make it a two-run final. After Lettire gave up all of Maryland's runs, Kuhn entered for two innings of hitless relief.
Quist hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to put Princeton on the board and make it 27 career round-trippers, and freshman Sarah Rounsifer picked up an RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-4. Princeton manufactured another run in the seventh for the 7-5 final.
